Lego Digital Box and "Augmentent Reality"

Who does not love the Legos ? We all love it and legos were a part of most of us' childhood. Sometimes while walking at the shopping malls, I usually visit the toy shops and take a look at the new toys and always new lego sets take my attention.

Remote control toys (cars, hellicopters..etc) to movie making sets; The Lego has an huge variant of different sets. Also lego toys bring you unlimited-creativity freedom. You can design and make whatever you want.. Even there are printers made by legos..

While watching some lego videos at Youtube, I came across a video of Lego's Chicago store. The Lego Digital Box that uses Augmented Reality technology has taken my attention.

Imagine mulling over two new Lego sets, wondering which one would look more impressive on your parents' mantle. To help you out, Lego's Digital Box shows a 3D model right there in the store.
If a box is held in front of its screen, the German-only (for now) Digital Box will scan the bar code and present an animated model of the completed set on its screen. Apparently it uses the same tech used by camera phones to scan bar codes and present product data, but obviously much better because the result is always a 3D Lego model [Gizmodo]
It was impressive actually so I wanted to share that in my blog for the ones who have not seen it yet. An example of real effective usage of AR technology in the market. To talk about the AR technology;

Augmented reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated sensory input such as sound or graphics. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. [Wikipedia]
